On Wednesday the Senate approved an agreement for a power split in the chamber. After the Georgia Runoff where Democrats John Ossof and Raphael Warnock won the Senate is now a 50 – 50 split between the democrat and republican parties. Since the democrats have the white house now Vice President Harris is the tie breaker. A power split that will allow Democrats to take control of committees was passed.
Without a power-sharing agreement, the tie prevented democrats from taking control of the Senate due to a 50 – 50 tie. The chamber was operating under the rules of the last Congress, when the GOP was in charge. A power-sharing agreement between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was needed to determine how power would be divided in the senate. The lack of an agreement had created complications for Democrats and delayed consideration of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominees.
The agreement they came to Wednesday is similar to the agreement made in 2001.
