Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and other Florida lawmakers announced new proposals Tuesday to regulate Social Media Companies. The Governor said “Over the years, these platforms have changed from neutral platforms that provide Americans with the freedom to speak to enforcers of preferred narratives.”
Florida State Senate President Wilton Simpson said “There’s not much we can do as a state. But we need Congress to act on a nationwide basis. The big tech companies have the duty to allow differing views on their public platforms. No one should be excluded.”
There have been several proposals brought forth in the sunshine state on different regulations. One proposal would make Facebook, Twitter etc… give users 1 months notice before there accounts are suspended. Another would block social media companies from suspending accounts of political candidates from the state and fine them $100,000 a day that they a candidate is suspended. Users would also be able to sue the tech giants if they were treated unfairly and social media companies would be required to reveal how they became aware of any content they censor.
