Bicyclists share space with pedestrians as they cross the Brooklyn and Queensboro bridges in NYC. Mayor de Blasio announced new plans to give them their own lanes as part of the “Bridges for the People” project on Thursday evening. The project was announced as part of his final State of the City speech.
The inner car lane in the Manhattan-bound direction on the Brooklyn Bridge will be turned into a two-way bicycle lane, and the space that bicyclists and pedestrians currently use will be used by pedestrians only.
De Blasio said construction will start this year on the outer roadway on the north side of the Queensboro bridge making it into a two-way bicycle lane, while the outer roadway on the south side would be for pedestrians.
De Blasio’s spoke about recovering from the pandemic, vaccinations, education, and policing and climate change. He has been adding more bike lanes across the city as it has been becoming a lot more popular in recent years.
