John Cox – a Republican launched his campaign for California governor Monday with a TV ad saying Current California Governor Gavin Newsom and GOP rival Kevin Faulconer are “twins”. Cox said in the ad “I’m a businessman, not a politician. It’s time for a fresh start.”
Cox previously ran for Governor of the State just 2 years ago against Governor Newsom and finished 2nd in their 2018 matchup coming in with 38% of the vote.
Cox will run against Newsom if he gets recalled or will run against him in 2022 if the recall effort fails. Cox is trying to get ahead of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer – a Republican who entered the race last week.
A statement from Faulconer’s campaign portrayed Cox as a fail candidate with a long history of losses behind him. In 2000 Cox ran for the House and twice for the Senate in Illinois, but fell short in crowded Republican primaries, he also has already lost to Governor Newsom in 201
Cox’s announcement came as the recall organizers reached 1.4 million signatures out of the 1.5 million needed by mid-March to qualify. More candidates will likely enter the race. A possible problem for the GOP would be multiple candidates running and dividing the vote, shattering the chances of a republican winning in a heavily democratic State like California.
